18:54:22 MattC: hi dave
18:54:30 dave-on-air: just getting set up
18:55:09 dave-on-air: should be ready to start by our regular 2 minutes after the hour
18:55:28 MattC: don't rush on my account
19:04:55 dave-on-air: hey guys
19:04:59 paulallison: hi
19:04:59 dave-on-air: nice to see you back!
19:07:43 JeffLebow: http://radio.upei.ca/
19:07:53 dave-on-air: ohh... that was fast
19:08:06 dave-on-air: HI JOHN
19:08:15 johnm: Hi Dave!
19:09:29 dave-on-air: hey harold
19:09:56 Harold_Jarche: Hi all :-)
19:10:24 JeffLebow: Wow, so exciting to have the old gang together again
19:14:50 JeffLebow: what stage is the Atlantic Wiki at?
19:14:58 JeffLebow: Is there anything online?
19:16:19 joycevalenza: imagine a wiki for folktales and their variants
19:16:41 dave-on-air: that's what i'm thinking
19:16:41 joycevalenza: archiving oral traditions of regions
19:16:49 dave-on-air: i've got a little thingy i might want to try later
19:17:00 joycevalenza: and oral histories of targeted groups
19:17:52 joycevalenza: imagine moving something like the Cinderella project to a wiki
19:18:43 dave-on-air: http://campuscommons.ca
19:18:58 joycevalenza: great term!
19:20:50 Harold_Jarche: Here's an example of a blog (not a wiki) produced by a friend of mine near DC who is connecting with his Cape Breton roots. This kind of content may work better in a wiki - who knows http://www.cousinagamfhein.net/wordpress/
19:21:44 dave-on-air: kathy has come and left...
19:21:48 dave-on-air: she does that
19:24:17 dave-on-air: i wanna try out some cultural wiki stuff
19:24:30 MattC: How might this compare to Digital Storytelling?
19:24:31 dave-on-air: http://pontchartrain.pbwiki.com/FrontPage
19:24:41 dave-on-air: http://talesofthephantomship.pbwiki.com/
19:24:47 dave-on-air: two songs... from different areas
19:24:54 dave-on-air: i see the audio on the page
19:24:58 dave-on-air: pictures
19:25:03 johnm: It would be interesting to explore the links with secondlife to develop children's books
19:25:03 dave-on-air: interview with the artist
19:25:12 dave-on-air: and then
19:25:17 dave-on-air: oh god... don't say secondlife
19:25:20 johnm: lol
19:25:41 dave-on-air: the password to both of those wikis is 'wiki'
19:25:56 dave-on-air: imagine having the students pick a section of the song they don't understand
19:26:03 dave-on-air: and then create a page explaining hte context
19:26:17 dave-on-air: thereby creating the content
19:26:23 dave-on-air: useful for the classroom
19:26:32 dave-on-air: and for the tourism association
19:28:27 JeffLebow: Because those PEI'er are a rowdy bunch!
19:28:45 dave-on-air: can't trust that nipple boy.
19:29:37 dave-on-air: hi lee
19:29:43 lee: Hi Dave
19:30:03 dave-on-air: kathy
19:30:07 dave-on-air: have you made it?
19:30:29 lee: Hi Kathy
19:30:45 kmls: yes, finally...I had the wierdest time getting into the chat room...browser kept closing
19:30:47 kmls: HI lee
19:30:52 lee: Mine too
19:30:58 JeffLebow: If anyone wouild like to join in, please feel free to skype 'worldbridges'
19:31:07 johnm: Dee... I could see this idea being interesting for some of the African American kids in Columbia SC
19:31:14 kmls: Jeff....you didn't float away this week!
19:31:22 johnm: an interesting idea of a summer project at Fast Forward.
19:31:40 JeffLebow: or call in to 1-603-574-4923
19:32:00 deea: John: I was thinking about bridging some of the new problems we are seeing with Hispanic vs. African American cultures a great way to learn about each other.
19:32:04 JeffLebow: High and dry here in the Bowzone
19:32:10 johnm: Very cool
19:32:22 dave-on-air: dee... you should skype in...
19:32:23 johnm: dee, post your website so others can see what you do
19:32:30 kmls: Me too, but can't go the short way to work...Bow Junction...still under water!
19:33:11 deea: Fast Forward www.fastforwardctc.com. We now have a group in Mexico starting and a group in Brazil to work with.
19:35:00 johnm: kids in both the African American and Hispanic community here are really interested in caipoera.....a type of brazilan-African dance.
19:35:18 johnm: be interesting to explore something down that vein
19:35:54 lee: Hey thats up my alley
19:36:00 lee: Is it bluegrass?
19:36:02 lee: Can I go?
19:36:56 lee: What is Mark's last name
19:37:04 dave-on-air: hemphill
19:38:53 joycevalenza: oral histories and folklore are the ultimate open source content
19:39:00 dave-on-air: yes yes yes
19:39:15 joycevalenza: on little cat feet
19:40:53 paulallison: I've been in an out... but totally here now.
19:42:33 deea: John, if you look at Seattle On Hold, www.seattle.gov, it would be a great start. We are going to be doing that in Columiba, we hope by the end of the year. That, along with the music videos our kids are doing to original music in the summer camps, we could have something together quickly.
19:44:16 johnm: GOOD QUESTION
19:44:52 johnm: Dee tell them what you did with the kids in Columbia SC
19:45:05 johnm: and their virtual worlds.
19:45:11 johnm: can you phone or skpe in?
19:45:17 JeffLebow: either
19:45:26 JeffLebow: 1-603-574-4923
19:45:29 JeffLebow: 'worldbridges'
19:46:52 joycevalenza: love it
19:47:23 johnm: DEE can you phone in?
19:48:06 deea: We have a series of summer camps. A new camp this summer is music video. Local bands have given us songs to use, we have adapted "The Movies" software, the students will be creating videos for original music that will be on our website and on the bands' websites. Is that what you wanted John?
19:48:21 dave-on-air: that sounds very cool
19:48:27 johnm: YEP
19:48:39 johnm: tell us about it
19:48:44 johnm: and the cohort of kids you work with
19:50:09 Harold_Jarche: sure, dave
19:50:40 deea: Our camps are develped and taught by high school students that have trained with us for years. The kids are from very different backgrounds. In fact, some of our kids will be doing a workshop at the CTCNet annual conference this year on how to create technology based summer camps. Sorry, I am having mike problems and can't get on right now.
19:51:08 johnm: Dee....phone or skype in and join the conversation
19:51:31 deea: John: Give me the number to call in.
19:51:41 JeffLebow: 1-603-574-4923
19:52:16 MattC: Is a wiki the best format for all these types of folk media?
19:52:21 dave-on-air: mmm...
19:52:28 dave-on-air: always a good question to come back to
19:52:29 JeffLebow: interesting question
19:52:50 Harold_Jarche: yep - storytelling is a great way to start, and learn
19:53:32 dave-on-air: hi susan
19:53:32 MattC: Will an author get upset about losing control over their story?
19:53:42 dave-on-air: ah... but folk stories are like that
19:53:50 deea: I'm on now John.
19:53:57 paulallison: hi susan
19:53:58 johnm: YEAH
19:55:51 SusanEttenheim: hi everyone
19:56:00 dave-on-air: keystrokes in the conversation
19:56:08 dave-on-air: i keep forgetting my mute
19:56:13 MattC: Yes, but folk stories evolve and passed down over generations. I'm not convinced that they lend themselves to the rapid editing of a wiki.
19:56:34 dave-on-air: mmm...
19:56:35 johnm: Dee has done great work with the use of "The Movies" and local bands
19:56:38 dave-on-air: i could type slower
19:57:16 dave-on-air: :)
19:59:03 Harold_Jarche: most of our teachers (NB, Canada) are just as far behind
19:59:15 dave-on-air: i've been skyped by john ROTFLMAO
20:05:37 kmls: How true you are Dave....
20:06:57 joycevalenza: hiding still
20:07:03 kmls: me too
20:07:09 kmls: great to listen to this stuff
20:07:15 lee: joyce where are you from?
20:07:22 deea: John: I'm ready to start.
20:07:34 kmls: Dave....we still have to meet up for the JUne conference
20:07:40 joycevalenza: great conversation, guys!
20:07:45 dave-on-air: yes we do kathy
20:07:50 johnm: me too we can talk off line about a closer link btwn Fast forward and Richland II
20:08:01 dave-on-air: thanks for coming everyone
20:08:02 kmls: This will give a small audience..but the ripple effect will be good
20:08:18 SusanEttenheim: i'm in sandbox a and we're set but not sure when you're going to stream a on channel one - how will we know?
20:08:47 lee: the website saiys you will be in sandbox a
20:09:51 lee: i need to reboot my computer.. be back soon.
20:10:46 JeffLebow: skype 'susanettenheim'
20:13:53 SusanEttenheim: hi everyone
20:13:57 SusanEttenheim: are you there?
20:14:00 johnm: Hello Susan
20:14:01 johnm: I am herre
20:14:14 SusanEttenheim: hi john - where do you teach?
20:14:27 SusanEttenheim: tnx for joining us tonight
20:14:36 johnm: I don't teach, I am listening. I run a philanthropic organization that supports education
20:14:41 johnm: I used to teach
20:14:45 kmls: yes...you are not just right, but VERY right!!
20:14:53 JeffLebow: What did you teach John?
20:15:03 kmls: me too
20:15:14 johnm: Philosophy and economics
20:15:18 kmls: this is what I grapple with all the time.
20:16:24 SusanEttenheim: kmls - what do you teach?
20:16:38 kmls: NH has new ICT standards (finally) that really excite I'm a technology coordinator in NH
20:17:06 SusanEttenheim: great! would you be able to skype in and join us in the conversation?
20:17:44 SusanEttenheim: john- what age level?
20:17:51 johnm: university
20:18:02 SusanEttenheim: if you would like to join us, please skype susanettenheim
20:18:19 SusanEttenheim: kmls - what grade?
20:18:32 johnm: you may want to ask Jeff and dave about that invitation :-)
20:18:43 SusanEttenheim: john - ?
20:18:54 SusanEttenheim: what am I missing? lol
20:19:41 dave-on-air: john...
20:19:44 dave-on-air: are you not being nice
20:19:46 dave-on-air: play friendly
20:19:52 SusanEttenheim: lol
20:20:24 SusanEttenheim: kmls - in what ways do you grapple with this?
20:21:07 JeffLebow: John is always a good discussion participant - seems to hesitate joining in though. I believe his preferred method of communication is 'backchanneling'. :)
20:21:25 SusanEttenheim: is that like back seat driving?
20:21:31 JeffLebow: yes
20:22:33 paulallison: I just went silent... should I wait or start again?
20:24:52 SusanEttenheim: kmls thanks for hanging in with us- please feel free to join in!
20:25:07 SusanEttenheim: you seemed so passionate about the topic in the beginning
20:28:41 dave-on-air: lee's process
20:28:46 dave-on-air: she doesn't tell anyone anything
20:28:53 dave-on-air: she just fires off
20:29:11 dave-on-air: what was that?
20:29:14 SusanEttenheim: and what about the other teachers? do they resent or join in?
20:29:23 dave-on-air: the 'keep the net free' thing
20:29:28 dave-on-air: or was that just me
20:29:29 SusanEttenheim: ??
20:29:35 SusanEttenheim: i didn't hear it
20:29:36 dave-on-air: sorry
20:29:39 dave-on-air: must just be me
20:29:40 SusanEttenheim: lol
20:30:04 deea: I heard it.
20:30:10 dave-on-air: mmm...
20:30:11 SusanEttenheim: hi dee
20:30:18 JeffLebow: that was a link my nephew sent to me
20:30:20 SusanEttenheim: welcome alex! glad you're here!
20:30:22 JeffLebow: only on Channel 1 simulcast
20:30:27 JeffLebow: Susan's audio is perfect
20:30:34 Alex.Ragone: Hi Susan.
20:30:42 dave-on-air: ah. it was jeff.
20:30:50 JeffLebow: I'm still learning
20:30:59 JeffLebow: hope to get the hang of this webcast thing sometime
20:33:26 Alex.Ragone: :)
20:34:50 deea: Sometimes the fear of where to put technology can be the problem. When we had our lab in a middle school, we had robotics, filmmmaking all kinds of things available at no charge to teachers all the time. The only thing they really wanted to use the lab for was wordprocessing or SAT software.
20:35:13 lee: I am not sure Susan, if other teachers are resentful or not... good question
20:36:35 lee: Dee.that in interesting. I think they are not sure how it fits into their lesson plan from days of ole'
20:37:59 JeffLebow: Wow! A full skype conference on their first show. I'm kinda jealous
20:38:02 lee: Where are you teaching or working Dee?
20:38:09 deea: I also think there is some confusion about the "cross curricular" aspects.
20:38:16 SusanEttenheim: jeff - lol it was a set-up!
20:38:19 johnm: I agree D
20:38:26 SusanEttenheim: did you hear my students this noon?
20:38:30 SusanEttenheim: they faked a call in!
20:38:34 deea: Lee: I direct a commuity technology center in Columbia, SC.
20:38:37 SusanEttenheim: and even fooled me!
20:38:43 JeffLebow: I missed it. Hope to hear the recording
20:38:53 JeffLebow: creative kids
20:39:08 lee: Thanks Dee
20:39:12 SusanEttenheim: dee - I really agree about the cross curricular issues!
20:39:49 SusanEttenheim: has anyone heard of that? chain problems?
20:41:15 SusanEttenheim: ugh professional development - the ultimate shared crisis across all schools and states!
20:41:24 dave-on-air: yes
20:41:48 dave-on-air: all solved by one massive 24 hour training session that will teach you everything you ever needed to know
20:42:03 lee: totally realistic!
20:42:06 SusanEttenheim: what about the sleep over retreat
20:42:30 deea: I also teach homeschool students. We are seeing more and more homeschool students who actually attend classes with different teachers. Technology is hard because most homeschool families don't have all of the technology that a school has.
20:46:06 Alex.Ragone: It's social.
20:46:15 kmls: Hi Sue,
20:46:31 SusanEttenheim: yes alex
20:46:32 lee: I really think there needs to alot more money spent on equipment
20:46:41 SusanEttenheim: hi kmls- what do you do at your school?
20:46:55 lee: its also comfort level..as you are sying with students is true with teachers
20:47:16 kmls: back again...the girls came home, so had to chat with them.
20:47:28 lee: hello
20:47:41 kmls: I am a district tech director..I gave up the classroom to try to promote the use of technology
20:47:50 Alex.Ragone: It's all about the conversation - talking and working with them to solve their problems.
20:47:54 lee: hard decision... i think
20:48:26 SusanEttenheim: so kmls - what are you actually doing and how is it working?
20:48:31 johnm: KMLS.....how much time do you spend in the classroom with the teachers?
20:49:10 Alex.Ragone: There are some great programs in maine using linux remote desktop clients... $6000 for a lab of machines
20:49:20 Alex.Ragone: Frank Moretti
20:49:24 kmls: Right now I do more supervising and making sure the technology is working
20:49:40 johnm: do you think that is the best use of your time?
20:49:41 Alex.Ragone: Yes indeed
20:49:48 Alex.Ragone: Telling the new story -- david warlick
20:49:50 lee: Thats what that position can become
20:49:58 kmls: I've done this for 5 years and this year I've really been far removed.
20:49:58 lee: Can Kathycall in?
20:50:29 kmls: My girls are cackling in the background
20:50:33 JeffLebow: I think this show will need to connect with a skypecast next week to allow more folks to call in
20:52:51 lee: oh, I was thinking it already was!
20:53:04 lee: Sorry.. I am already spoiled
20:53:05 SusanEttenheim: lol- haven't learned that yet
20:53:38 SusanEttenheim: kmls - can you share a success with us?
20:53:48 SusanEttenheim: in text... lol if you can't call in
20:53:57 SusanEttenheim: ;)
20:54:36 JeffLebow: Susan, if you already have five people in the skype conf, don't try to add someone else - will cause skype chaos. If you want to bring someone else in, you'll need to ask someone to step out.
20:55:30 kmls: The one thing I do feel good about is my "tech mentor" program
20:55:48 kmls: I think the preesnt speaker has about the same. (kathy)
20:57:14 SusanEttenheim: I'd love to start a tech mentor program!
20:57:21 SusanEttenheim: would love to hear more about it
20:57:31 SusanEttenheim: on my list for next year
20:57:48 kmls: It really is great...but after the second year, I've found that it may be getting more than I can handle alone
20:58:05 SusanEttenheim: do you have anything up online that I could see?
20:58:29 Alex.Ragone: I can dig some documents up for you Susan.
20:58:44 kmls: Not online...my goal is to get it on Moodle for next year.
20:59:02 SusanEttenheim: would love to see anything - even email!
20:59:14 SusanEttenheim: what about critical friends groups for tech?
20:59:27 Alex.Ragone: The technology has to work as well.
20:59:37 kmls: I'm going to revamp it for next year as we have new state ICT standards that require us to intergrate tech
20:59:52 kmls: I will email you my syllabus if you'd like
21:00:04 SusanEttenheim: great! settenh@nycboe.net
21:00:19 SusanEttenheim: maybe you'd all like to join us in a wiki plan?
21:00:47 kmls: Critical friends are important ..that could be a way for me to get the present mentors the support I can't always give them
21:00:51 SusanEttenheim: Paul and I and TTT - were planning to start a wiki for the "big" technology plan
21:00:57 kmls: What's the wiki?
21:01:17 lee: Wiki Textbook on Teaching Technology to Teachers
21:01:40 SusanEttenheim: we were thinking it would be good to do a high school tech plan all together and then adjust it for each school as needed
21:01:42 kmls: Boy, does that hit a sensitive spot. "I" wrote the plan for the district and no one knows about it no matter how much I brign it up.
21:01:46 lee: I know there the only one i am aware of is the one being started in Worldbridges
21:01:53 Alex.Ragone: Google school computing wiki
21:02:13 SusanEttenheim: lee -?
21:02:19 Alex.Ragone: http://schoolcomputing.wikia.com/wiki/School_Computing_Home_Page
21:02:22 SusanEttenheim: a technology plan/
21:02:47 Alex.Ragone: This is a great resource --- made by technologies in independent schools, but all are welcome to add to it.
21:02:48 kmls: That sounds great..I'm trying to be very critical about what I'm taking on as could be 24/7 in the Worldbridges programs!!
21:04:25 Alex.Ragone: Go Lee -- You are in our social network!
21:04:40 paulallison: cool... I was thinking of hooking up something at http://schools.wikia.com
21:04:47 paulallison: we should work together
21:05:00 Alex.Ragone: Definitely --
21:05:25 deea: John, I don't think we are very creative in how we teach teachers. I wish we could do summer camps for the teachers. If we make it fun for the teachers, let them see the possibilities rather than just the burden of learning something else. it's one thing to learn to use one more piece of equipment or web source and another to have to think up a creative way to use it too. Professional development for 45 minutes one day just doesn't give teachers an opportunity to do something. I feel like I'm rambling a little. Sorry.
21:05:44 SusanEttenheim: jeff?
21:05:47 SusanEttenheim: wiki?
21:05:55 SusanEttenheim: dave?
21:06:37 johnm: You are right on DEE not rambling at all
21:07:30 lee: I agree.. you are not, Dee.
21:07:44 kmls: I wish you were all in my meeting this afternoon when I had to get teachers discuss how we implement the new ICT standards.
21:08:02 JeffLebow: I'm back- was there a question for Dave or me?
21:08:38 lee: yes tell susan about the wiki textbook project.. I am not sure I can
21:08:56 JeffLebow: Yikes! Where's Dave when you need him?
21:09:05 lee: true
21:09:17 JeffLebow: John can probably field that one better than either of us
21:09:27 SusanEttenheim: I think we're talking about a wiki space to build a shared vision of a technology plan
21:09:33 SusanEttenheim: I think?
21:10:34 Alex.Ragone: Getting to know your student --- that's right on Paul. Solving problems for faculty is huge.
21:12:16 Alex.Ragone: Gotta run -- I'll listen to the end of the broadcast over the stream. Keep up the good work.
21:14:16 JeffLebow: How about putting the Educationbridges Wiki to use?
21:14:23 JeffLebow: It's getting a bit dusty
21:15:00 JeffLebow: http://www.educationbridges.org/mediawiki/index.php/Main_Page
21:15:01 kmls: That would be a good use for that. Then I wouldn't have to find a new page to bookmark and then forget about! *)
21:16:01 Alex.Ragone: Great show --- Thanks, Susan!
21:16:10 JeffLebow: Bravo
21:16:12 JeffLebow: Encore, Encore
21:16:29 lee: Thank you guys for inviting me
21:16:34 deea: Thanks, great show.
21:16:37 kmls: Thanks too.
21:16:39 Alex.Ragone: Jeff -- you guys are really rocking
21:16:48 SusanEttenheim: thank you!
21:16:59 kmls: thank you!
21:16:59 SusanEttenheim: you are great teachers!
21:17:07 JeffLebow: Look forward to next Wednesday
21:17:44 SusanEttenheim: jeff - can one copy and paste from this chat into a text editor?
21:17:49 SusanEttenheim: to archive the chat?
21:19:18 JeffLebow: I get admin access to transcripts
21:19:26 JeffLebow: will send you an html file in a few minutes
21:19:32 SusanEttenheim: great!
