Assistive Technology Resources

Please list any information, resources, and hardware/software you use for students with disabilities.

Hands free computer access solution is available through http://www.brainfingers.com. There is a good video from Discovery Channel to explain how it works on the site. I would imagine a grant might provide the money to buy one for those with definate needs from disabilities.

If text to speech is desired then Dragon Naturally speaking is definitely the way to go. It is much better and networkable - probably not an issue.
I would look carefully at text to speech as it is a lot of detail work that slows one down. We have a set up and work with student's on trial and about only 10% of them find the software worth it.

Another software option is word predication software. We use SOLO from Don Johnston. The CO-writer software component is very handy for word predication and works with all text entry programs and web sites. http://www.donjohnston.com/products/cowriter/index.html

I know there is also Premier products.

If you are a mac environment, Dragon needs to run in a windows environment. I would try paralells with an intell mac to use it.
The other products run on both. Dragon can be up to $750. Solo is about $800 and Premier is around $400 I think.

Those are my immediate thoughts at getting your student up and running in text products. I would welcome an audio chat as to her particular needs.
